Thanks for the post. I have off lately read a lot of articles on Mental illness of Collegians. I believe that it is very important to give the teens coaching and consulting from highly skilled docs. We have to help them develop Good Coping Skills for the Mind.

As someone that's had to sometimes rely on college counseling centers as their only treatment option, this really, really resonates with me. I really appreciated when the last college counselor I met with plainly admitted that she nor the other counselors were qualified enough to tackle long-term treatment. That said, I don't understand why the counseling center exists if it does more mediating than counseling. She said, "You're better off finding a specialist," but I was at college counseling and not a "specialist" because I didn't have any money; it was locked up in tuition! The counselor I saw before that (at the same counseling center) let her level of professionalism shine by responding to my confession that I was struggling with binge eating, with, "What! But you're so skinny!" I was really, really frustrated with my lack of options - am STILL frustrated with my lack of options - and just wish the whole thing were structured so differently. (I've had experiences at another college counseling center, too - slightly better but still pretty inadequate. Point being, I agree so much and am glad you've written this.)
